Avoid these common mistakes people make when using a pressure washer.
Spring has arrived, and often at this time of year we’re thinking of cleaning down our decking or patio areas so that we can get our barbecue out and sit in the garden to enjoy the sunshine.
Many of us use a pressure washer to make this job easier and quicker. They’re incredibly useful tools for cleaning a variety of surfaces, from driveways and decks to cars and outdoor furniture.
However, using them in the wrong way can lead to damage or even injury.
To ensure you get you the best results and stay safe, here are some common mistakes to avoid:
1. Using the wrong nozzle
One of the most common mistakes is using the wrong nozzle for the job. Pressure washers come with different nozzles that vary the spray pattern and pressure. Using a nozzle with too narrow a spray can damage surfaces, while a nozzle with too wide a spray might not clean effectively. Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines to choose the right nozzle for your task.
2. Applying too much pressure
It's tempting to crank up the pressure to get the job done faster, but this can cause more harm than good. High pressure can strip paint, damage wood, and even scratch concrete. Start with the lowest pressure setting and gradually increase it until you find the right balance between cleaning power and surface safety.
3. Ignoring safety gear
Safety should always be a priority. Wearing protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and sturdy footwear can prevent injuries from flying debris and high-pressure water. Never point the pressure washer at yourself or others and be mindful of your surroundings.
4. Not prepping the surface
Before you start pressure washing, it's important to prepare the surface. Remove loose debris, cover delicate plants, and close windows and doors. This preparation helps ensure that the cleaning process is effective and prevents damage to nearby items. For wood you must clean down the grain of the wood, this helps to avoid damage.
5. Using the wrong cleaning solution
Not all cleaning solutions are suitable for use with pressure washers. Some chemicals can damage the washer or the surface you're cleaning. Always use a detergent that is specifically designed for pressure washers and follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and application.
6. Cleaning in the wrong order
When cleaning large areas, it's important to work in a logical order. For example, when washing a house, start from the top and work your way down. This prevents dirty water from running over areas you've already cleaned. Similarly, when cleaning a driveway, start at the highest point and work your way down to avoid streaks.
It’s best to work from one corner of your decking or patio gradually moving in a sweeping motion. Then rinsing using a lighter pressure.
7. Overlooking maintenance
Regular maintenance of your pressure washer is crucial for its longevity and performance. This includes checking hoses and connections for leaks, cleaning the nozzle, and changing the oil if your washer has a gas engine. Proper maintenance will give you a washer that operates efficiently and safely.
8. Using hot water incorrectly
Some pressure washers are designed to use hot water, which can be more effective for certain cleaning tasks. However, using hot water in a machine that isn't designed for it can cause damage. Always check your pressure washer's specifications and use the appropriate water temperature.
9. Neglecting to test on a small area
Before tackling the entire surface, it's a good idea to test the pressure washer on a small area. This helps you gauge the pressure and cleaning solution's success without risking damage to a larger area.
10. Not following the manufacturer's instructions
Every pressure washer is different, and it's important to read and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This includes guidelines on assembly, operation, and maintenance. Ignoring these instructions can lead to improper use and potential damage.
It’s a dirty job, but we hope our tips will help you get the most out of your pressure washing so that you can enjoy your outside area over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekends.
