Get your grill out for ‘National BBQ Week’

As the days get longer and the weather warms up, you may be starting to think about dusting off the grill and enjoying outdoor dining with family and friends. And we now have a dedicated 'Barbecue Food' section on Prices.je

Now in its 30th year, the UK’s ‘National BBQ Week’ runs from 25 May to 1 June, coinciding with the school half-term holiday. It’s the perfect excuse to start embracing the barbecue season and to think about making the most of al fresco cooking.

National BBQ Week is an annual celebration that was first held in 1997. It was established to encourage people across the UK to fire up their barbecues and enjoy simple, great-tasting food outdoors.

Whether you’re a seasoned grill master, or someone trying barbecue cooking for the first time, the week is all about bringing people together, experimenting with flavours, and making mealtimes more fun.

From classic burgers and sausages to grilled vegetables, seafood, and plant-based options, barbecuing can offer something for everyone. It’s also a great way to enjoy fresh, local ingredients while spending time outdoors – and it doesn’t always have to be expensive if you shop around.

Make the most of the barbecue season in Jersey

Living in Jersey gives us a fantastic advantage during the barbecue season – access to high-quality local produce, fresh sea air and beautiful outdoor spaces.

Whether you're hosting a garden party, a beach picnic, or a relaxed dinner at home, a barbecue is a great option.

To help you prepare, it’s worth planning ahead:

  • Look at Prices.je to compare grocery prices.
  • Stock up on essentials like charcoal, gas, sauces, and marinades ahead of time.
  • Choose your menu – meats, fish, vegetables, and sides.
  • If you’re heading out, make sure to transport the food in a cool container or bag – don’t leave it sitting in a warm car.
  • Check your equipment – make sure your barbecue and utensils are clean and ready to use
  • Think local – support Jersey suppliers where possible.

Ultimately, National BBQ Week is about enjoying good food and good company. Whether you’re cooking for family, friends, colleagues, or even just for yourself, take the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate the start of the summer.

To ensure your barbecue is a success:

  • Prepare ahead by marinating meat and experimenting with different flavours and spices.
  • You can chop salads and vegetables in advance.
  • You may also want to think about including grilled vegetables or plant-based options on your menu.
  • Always make sure the food is thoroughly cooked, especially chicken and pork.
  • Remember to keep things relaxed, because barbecues are meant to be fun and can be done cost-effectively if you shop around.

Barbecue safety – keep yourself and Jersey safe

Jersey is the perfect place to enjoy a barbecue.

There are lots of scenic areas around the coast, overlooking the sea, that are the idea place to take a disposable barbecue to. Take a look at the Visit Jersey website for inspiration.

You can enjoy barbecues on the beach or in other outdoor places, but please take care to prevent fires and stay safe:

  • Choose a safe spot: Set up in a clear, open area well away from dry grass, gorse, fences, trees and buildings. Keep a respectful distance from others.
  • Never leave it unattended: Always keep a close eye on your barbecue while it’s in use.
  • Be prepared: Have a bucket of water or sand nearby to deal with flare-ups, or to cool ashes.
  • Protect the countryside: Avoid open fires and take care near gorse and heathland, which can ignite easily.

Use barbecues safely:

  • Only use barbecues outdoors and position them so the smoke blows away from people.
  • Never use petrol or paraffin to light them.
  • Ensure gas barbecues are in good working order with secure, leak-free connections.

Dispose of waste carefully:

  • Make sure ashes and disposable barbecues are fully cooled before moving or disposing of them.
  • Fully extinguish cigarettes, matches and lighters.
  • Please clear away all of your rubbish, and take your barbecue home once it is completely cold, especially if there is no suitable bin nearby. Never leave waste or your disposable barbecue on the beach.
  • If you see a fire, call 999 immediately and move away to a safe area. For more detailed barbecue safety advice, visit the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service website.
