12 free things to do with the kids in Jersey this summer

We’re heading towards the summer holidays and with six weeks to fill you might be looking for ways to keep the children entertained during the summer holidays without spending a fortune. Jersey is packed with free adventures, from beaches and parks to castles, woods and rock pools. 

In a bid to help you out when you're stuck for things to do we have put together a list of free activities. 

Here are our top 12:

1. Go rock pooling 

Grab a bucket and net and explore the rock pools at. Great places to do this are, Green Island, La Rocque and Anne Port 

See what you can find hiding under the rocks – crabs, shrimps, fish and sea anemones are all waiting to be discovered.  

 

2. Beach treasure Hunt 

Create a challenge and see who can find: 

  • A heart-shaped stone

  • A striped shell 

  • Sea glass 

  • A feather 

  • A crab shell 

Put them in an old jar with some sand when you get home to make a memory jar. Perfect for children of all ages and makes a simple beach walk much more exciting. 

 

3. Explore Grosnez Castle 

One of Jersey's best free historical sites. 

Climb around the castle ruins, learn a little history and enjoy some of the most spectacular views on the island. Take a picnic and make a morning of it. 

 

4. Discover St Catherine's Woods 

A favourite for little adventurers. 

Follow the woodland trails and steppingstones. See if you can spot a woodpecker and build a den.

It feels like stepping into a storybook. 

 

5. Walk a Section of the Cliff Paths 

The north coast cliff paths are full of mini adventures. 

Look for: 

  • Seabirds 

  • Boats 

  • Hidden bays 

  • Wildflowers 

Pack snacks and let the children lead the way. 

 

6. Explore Plemont Caves 

Visit Plemont bay at low tide and discover the sea caves, check out the rock formations. 

It’s a real Jersey adventure that costs nothing. Always check tide times first. 

 

7. Sandcastle Challenge 

Choose a beach and have a family competition, make an event of it. 

Great locations for this could be, St Brelade's Bay, St Ouen's Bay, Grouville Beach or West Park 

Extra points for moats, drawbridges and flags.

 

8. Nature Spotting at the Reservoirs 

Take a walk around Queen's Valley Reservoir or Val de la Mare Reservoir 

See how many birds, butterflies and dragonflies you can identify along the way. 

 

9. Sunset Picnic at St Ouen's Bay 

One of the best free evenings on the island. 

Bring: 

  • A picnic blanket 

  • Snacks 

  • A football or frisbee 

Watch the surfers and stay for the sunset. 

 

10. Visit a park and let them run wild 

Jersey has some fantastic free parks and gardens. 

Family favourites include:

Millennium Park – playground, water features and large grassy areas. 

Coronation (Millbrook) Park – paddling pool, play areas and picnic space. 

Elephant Park – home to Jersey's famous elephant slide. 

Howard Davis Park – beautiful gardens, playground and café. 

Les Jardins de la Mer – fun water maze and great views of Elizabeth Castle.  

Sandy Park – swings and climbing with a view of Gorey Castle and the sea

Take a picnic and let the children burn off some energy. Why not try and visit them all and get the kids to rate them?

 

11. Swim at the Lido (Havre des Pas) 

A Jersey childhood classic. 

Spend the day: 

  • Swimming in the sea pool 

  • Jumping off the diving platform 

  • Hunting for crabs 

  • Fishing with string and a piece of bread 

  • Taking a picnic 

Hours of entertainment and plenty of happy memories for free. 

 

12. Create a Jersey Summer Adventure Passport 

Make a summer adventure passport and tick activities off throughout the holidays: 

  1. Find a crab 

  2. Explore a cave 

  3. Visit a castle 

  4. Walk a cliff path 

  5. Find a fort

  6. Build a sandcastle 

  7. Spot a dolphin 

  8. Visit five different beaches 

  9. Swim in the Lido 

  10. Complete a park challenge
