Summer inter-island ferry sailings between Jersey and Guernsey cancelled

All planned summer inter-island ferry sailings between Jersey and Guernsey have been cancelled following a decision by DFDS to remove the service from sale.

The ferry company confirmed the cancellation after Guernsey’s Committee for Economic Development rejected proposals for a weekend-only inter-island ferry service during the summer season.

DFDS have said that operational and scheduling challenges had made the proposed service difficult to deliver and stated that discussions with Guernsey authorities had not resulted in an agreement on how the route would operate.

They told ITV News that affected customers had been sent a text message detailing the cancellation and would automatically be issued a full refund.

The planned sailings had been expected to provide additional travel options between the islands during the peak summer period, when demand for passenger travel typically increases.

Guernsey politicians previously described the proposed timetable as 'undeliverable', citing concerns over harbour operations, vessel scheduling and the practical delivery of the service.

The cancellation means passengers wanting to travel directly between Jersey and Guernsey this summer will have fewer available ferry options. Existing operators are expected to continue running their current services between the islands.

Inter-island transport has remained a topic of political and public discussion in recent months, particularly around affordability, scheduling and long-term connectivity between the Channel Islands.

Earlier this year, a Jersey scrutiny panel recommended closer cooperation between Jersey and Guernsey on ferry and freight links following concerns raised about pricing and service resilience.

DFDS has said it remains open to future discussions regarding inter-island services.

Passengers who had intended to book or use the cancelled sailings are being advised to check directly with other ferry operators regarding alternative travel arrangements and updated schedules.

Meanwhile, as a result of the inter-island cancellations freeing up vessels, DFDS have added further sailings between Jersey and St Malo to allow for increased day trips.

The extra sailings will run on Mondays 6 and 20 July, 3, 17, and 24 August. DFDS will also put on an extra sailing on Thursday 2 July, so Islanders can travel to the Le Mans motorsport event.
