Supermarkets aren't the only place to find good value

While many Islanders rely on Prices.je to compare the cost of everyday essentials across Jersey’s main supermarkets, it’s important to remember that our weekly survey is only one part of the bigger picture. Yes, supermarkets are convenient, and comparing their prices helps households make informed choices — but they certainly aren’t the only place to find value.

Across the Island, smaller independent retailers are quietly offering prices that frequently match, and sometimes beat, the major chains. If you’re looking to stretch your budget a little further, it’s well worth exploring what’s on your doorstep.

Pharmacies often carry excellent deals on toiletries, baby products and personal-care items. Many run regular promotions or stock alternative brands at lower prices than you might expect.

Pet shops can be surprisingly competitive on pet food and accessories. Bulk offers, loyalty schemes and specialist advice can make a big difference to your monthly spend.

And local veg shops and honesty boxes remain some of the Island’s most underrated sources of fresh, affordable produce. From seasonal vegetables to locally grown staples, these small outlets frequently offer fantastic value, and support local growers at the same time.

We know Islanders love a good bargain, and we love celebrating businesses that help keep household costs manageable. So, if you’ve discovered a retailer consistently offering great prices, we want to hear about it. Your tip-offs help us broaden our consumer monitoring and shine a light on the full range of options available to Islanders.

Likewise, if you’re a retailer who regularly undercuts supermarket prices on everyday essentials, please get in touch. We’re always keen to recognise local shops doing their part to support consumers.

Bargains exist all over Jersey and sometimes in the most unexpected places. So next time you’re shopping around, take a moment to explore the Island’s smaller retailers. Your wallet may thank you for it.

If you’ve spotted a standout bargain or run a business that deserves to be acknowledged, contact the Jersey Consumer Council — we’d love to include you in our consumer updates.
