Where do Islanders stand with one of the biggest consumer scandals in years?

By Carl Walker, Jersey Consumer Council Chairman

If you’ve been following the headlines about car finance miss-selling in the UK, you’ll know it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest consumer scandals in years.

Thousands of motorists were allegedly charged higher interest rates through “discretionary commission” deals — and compensation claims are already being made across the water.

Here in the Channel Islands, we’ve been working to establish exactly where Islanders stand. The Jersey Consumer Council has been gathering information, liaising with local lenders and dealerships, and seeking clarity from both regulators and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority. We’re determined to ensure that any Island consumer who has been unfairly treated is given the same right to redress as UK drivers.

However, I want to stress one very important point: please don’t rush into using any of the companies now advertising “car finance refund” services. These agencies simply complete the same straightforward paperwork that consumers can do themselves — but take a hefty commission for doing so. There is absolutely no need to pay anyone to act on your behalf.

We will soon provide clear, step-by-step guidance on what you need to do and when.

So, for now, sit tight. There’s no need to fill in forms, pay fees, or sign up with third-party agencies. We’re on your side, we’re on the case, and we’ll make sure that, when the time comes, Island consumers know exactly how to claim what they’re owed — safely, fairly, and for free.

  • Real stories, real help: Marking 30 years the Jersey Consumer Council way

When we started planning how to mark the Jersey Consumer Council’s 30th anniversary, we faced a choice. We could have done what many organisations do at such milestones: host a dinner, raise a glass, and look back fondly at our achievements.

  • A fair for the people

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Jersey Consumer Council – three decades spent standing up for Islanders, challenging unfairness, and giving consumers a voice. It’s a milestone we're proud of, but rather than throwing a party to celebrate ourselves, we asked a simple question: how can we give something back?

  • Encouraging young people to shop around

Did you know that in a recent survey of young people in Jersey, “cheaper housing and food” was listed as one of their top priorities?
